Yep we have a new addition to the family. His name is Puck (my idea, not Liza's) and he's a rambunctious little troublemaker who also happens to be rather cute. He looks to be part Collie, part German Shepherd, part Chow, part Australian Shepherd, part... aw the hell with it he's a freakin' mutt. :) Pics to follow from Liza as soon as we get regular internet access. Also for those in the know, you may be amused to hear that Puck has followed in mommy's footsteps and threw up all over me in the car on the way home - and no jewelry was required. :P For those not in the know, I'll let Liza tell that story...

In other news, visited Chaac over the weekend in Michigan and went out to a shooting range. Considering I'm a certified card-carrying liberal this may surprise some people but I've never had anything against people having guns. It was a fun time and I got to shoot a .44 Magnum, and let me tell ya something... Dirty Harry is complete science-fiction. As it turns out I'm going shooting AGAIN in a few weeks for a bachelor party. But I'm not buying any guns. Seriously...

One thing about the weekend visit that made me chuckle was Liza's reaction to visiting Michigan. Turns out she's going to root for Ohio State after experiencing the rancid cesspool of the State Up North firsthand. And she thought I was exaggerating... GO BUCKS!

Two weeks and counting....

Two weeks from now I'll be flying out to Fargo, ND to meet Liza and her folks. Things have kind of calmed down, and it's amazing how much stuff we've gotten from friends and family. When we first started discussing her moving we thought we'd be watching TV on a couple of cardboard boxes, but thankfully that's not the case. Mom has been real helpful which kind of shocked me, but since Liza's of prime childbearing age I shouldn't be too surprised ;)

On the school front I am really getting tired of Marketing class, in particular this group project we're doing. I'm stuck in a group with this bossy blonde beyatch who wants to run everything and wants to do none of the work - seems like she'll make an excellent manager.

Earlier I said things have calmed down, but it's really the calm before the storm. Turns out my sister is flying up from Florida to visit Labor Day weekend. Liza and I are going to be uber-busy once we get back to Ohio. We've got plans so far to go out with my sister, to go to the Canfield fair, visit Chaac and the rest of his family at their family reunion, go to the Hartford Apple Festival, puppy shopping, go to the Pittsburgh Ren Fest, and somehow in between all that we've gotta find time to unpack and settle in the house, and oh yeah, find jobs. So if you guys don't hear from us for a month or two after the move don't feel neglected ;)

Now I'm heading off to do something I've never done before (shopping at garage sales) but before I go....

Things are really getting hectic, hence the lack of updates. As of now Liza and I officially have a house (WOOT!), but the hard part is coming up. We're getting a lot of free stuff from our respective moms and relatives but there's still a lot of stuff to get and pay for. Oy. Another headache is school. At this point I've decided that I'm going to go part-time and work full-time. Taking five classes this semester would cost a ton of money, not to mention it would limit the amount of time I can work, so part-time makes the most sense. If our financial situation improves and I can somehow snag a scholarship maybe I can go back to full-time. Speaking of school, got A's in Macro-econ and Management, so the 4.0 is still intact. Marketing seems to be pretty easy, except for this group project and this bossy blonde beyatch I have to work with, so I should have the four-point when I go to apply for stuff this fall.

I just got back from class today and I was fiddling through my notes and stuff getting ready for tomorrow's finals when it hits me: College football training camp starts in one month. WOOOOOOOT! As I contemplate and eagerly await another year of cheering on my beloved Buckeyes, I realize that the Brunette Goddess will arrive just in time to behold the glorious sight of me uttering loud and creative obscenities at the television when my cherished Ohio State squad fails to live up to expectations. My friend Craig has seen this on many occasions...

At this point I usually begin to drool and stutter and generally act like a testosterone-crazed Neanderthal until slapped senseless or the game is over, whichever comes first. But nothing... NOTHING.. gets me in a shivering, lathered-up hissy fit of biblical proportions like the final game of the year against those hated Wolverweenies from That State Up North. More than likely my dear sweetie will have to leave the house with any critters we may have and lock up any and all sharp objects.

Non-college football fans and non-Ohioans have no idea of the depth of hatred we have for that armpit of America known as Mi... Mich... man it hurts to even type it out. Michigan. Pardon me while I retch. Craig LIVES there, and dude I have no idea what vile act you committed in a former life to be sentenced to living in Hell on Earth in that cesspool up north but it must have been a doozy.
To illustrate just how bad we hate That State Up North, here's my favorite story involving former Ohio State football coach Wayne Woodrow (Woody) Hayes:

One night on a recruiting trip in the state of Michigan, an assistant noticed that the car he was driving was going to run out of gas. He let Woody, who was dozing in the passenger seat, know that he had to pull over for gas. Woody refused, and the assistant drove on. The assistant, who saw the weather was starting to get bad, began to become worried about getting stuck in the middle of nowhere, and once again stressed his desire to pull over and get gas. Woody erupted: "No, goddammit! We do NOT pull in and fill up. And I'll tell you exactly why we don't. It's because I don't buy one goddamn drop of gas in the state of Michigan! We'll coast and PUSH this goddamn car to the Ohio line before I give this state a nickel of my money!" The assistant knew he wasn't kidding, and they barely made it across the border and sputtered into the first gas station they found in Ohio.

Ever get back from vacation and then need a vacation? That's what I was faced with this week. After flying back in from Alaska I was hit with having two make-up exams and a whopping case of jetlag. I was totally wasted Tuesday and slept almost all day, then begged and cajoled my profs to postpone my makeup exams till Wednesday and Thursday. Only problem was I got very little studying done while in AK and had to cram three regular weeks of college material for two classes into two days, and now I'm a total wreck. As the song goes, it's nobody's fault but mine but when you're in a beautiful state with a beautiful gal on your arm it's awful hard to think about schoolwork. ;)

As for Alaska the trip was awesome. Smoke from the forest fires put a damper on things but me and Liza had lots of fun anyway. Even with all the nasty smoke the landscape was really cool. We did all the touristy stuff and had a blast. It was really tough to leave but we only have a month and a half before Liza moves down so that made it a bit more bearable. Moo. :)

Now to relax for a bit this weekend, maybe go bother my friend Justin and see King Arthur, though there's somebody else I would much rather see it with if I had the option. Oh BTW Paulie was right on - Spidey 2 ownzzorz. Believe the hype.

Getting down to crunch time

In a little over 24 hours I'll be on a plane to Alaska to see the love of my life. I have to admit there are a bunch of butterflies the size of Mack trucks in my stomach. Most of it is my uncertainty towards flying, this being my first time, plus the length of the flight. God that 5 and a half hours from Minneapolis to Fairbanks is going to be sheer hell ;)

I've still got a little bit to pack not to mention that I have this nagging problem of another Economics exam in a few hours. It's been really hectic the last few days for the both of us getting ready and stuff but it'll be worth it. Mom and Papa need to meet the guy who's stealing their little girl away, and me and Liza get some much needed time together.

I've been trying to imagine what it's going to be like seeing her again, but I don't think anything is really going to prepare me for that moment. It's safe to say that I have never been so excited about something in all my life, and I'm not much for hyperbole. No doubt I'll remember it for the rest of my life.

Meanwhile the temperature up there is still in the 90's and I think poor Liza is ready to melt. :) There's some nasty forest fires up there too, and my sweetie is getting a little perturbed because she wants things to be perfect. But I just can't wait to see her and spoil her, so no matter how crappy everything else is I'm sure I'll have the time of my life.

Survived my first two-exam day of the summer, got A's on both my Management and Economics exams. That calls for a celebration and towards that end, I'm skipping Mgmt for today. :D Bad thing is that now since my Econ prof has added exams that pretty much means from here on out I'm going to have two exams on the same day every week till the term ends the middle of July. Blarg. If I can somehow get through the summer with my 4.0 GPA intact I might have a chance at a scholarship though, so here's hoping.

Sometime tomorrow one of my cousins from Florida is coming over to visit. One of those people you're related to but see once every ten years or so and wouldn't recognize them from Adam on the street - we've said maybe a couple of dozen words to each other in 30 years so this'll be fun.

6 days and counting till my trip to Alaska. Liza and I are pretty much both basket cases now and this week is soooo going to drag. August is starting to creep up on us too. Once I get back it's going to be full steam ahead, finding a place and then time to stop being a slacker and get a job ;) It's going to be a hectic time but I'm really looking forward to it, because with Liza here life is going to be a heck of a lot sweeter.

I knew today was going to be a crap day. Little did I know that it was going to make me just wanna holler.

Basically I just want to cap my management prof in the knees. I missed class yesterday to catch up on sleep, and according to the syllabus we were having an exam today. This lazy putz doesn't teach anything that's not in the book so of course I studied the relevant chapters all last night. Adding to the misery was that the Alaskan Goddess wasn't feeling good and wanted to talk but I didnt really have the time. So needless to say after studying all night this guy blows off the syllabus and delays the exam till Monday. So now I have two exams on Monday. Irritating but I can handle it. What he did during the lecture I couldn't.

About an hour through the class I was sitting there absentmindedly looking forward to going to Alaska, placing a mental bet on how many venereal diseases the sorority chick next to me had, and somewhat listening to the prof reading us the textbook. Out of the blue he talks about his daughter, who he said weighed 105 lbs before she went to Spain on some sort of college foreign exchange program, and then came back at around 180 lbs. Except he said it like this - "When she came back she was at 180 lbs... ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY POUNDS! Can you believe that? Her mother and I were so disgusted..."

Now is the time on Sprockets when we rant. I'm not normally a PC kinda guy, but WTF? Not only is this moron incompetent and lazy, but he's totally clueless about basic good manners and courtesy, not only to the point that he would slag on overweight people but his own daughter . Not to mention the young lady two rows ahead of me who was I'm sure much heavier than 180 lbs shaking her head in disgust as I was.

Don't get me wrong. As a certified fat boy I'm well aware of the screwed up perceptions against overweight people, and this is far from the first time I've been subjected to this kind of crap. But what gets me is the fact that at the time of this alleged lecture the prof was speaking about DIVERSITY AND ACCEPTANCE IN THE WORKPLACE. Here he was speaking one moment about how his daughter went to Spain to learn about new cultures and whatnot, and in the very next breath tells us all how disgusting she was because she had the gall and sheer audacity to weigh more than he thought she should. It's not so much the fact that this guy is a jerk, it's that I'm paying almost 2000 dollars a semester to listen to this jerk, and not only am I not learning anything but I also have to put up with the very narrowmindedness that our textbooks say have no place in the modern business world. Check that, I guess I am learning something - negative role models are very effective it seems.

Wow it's coming up fast. On June 29, I will get on a plane for the very first time to go see my sweetie. 10 and a half hours - ugh. Hopefully my motion sickness won't kick in. I'll probably be OD'ing on Dramamine that morning. Now if I can just get the dreams of a flaming plane cartwheeling down the runway out of my head I'll be set ;)

Still even if I'm puking all the way there it'll be worth it. Waiting till August to be together would have been pure hell. Liza suggested this trip and I'm glad she did. I get to meet the parents before the big move and I think that was important to her. My only worry is that Papa Carlson will try to get me to skin caribou or something like that. But as long as I avoid any WKRP in Cincinnati jokes I'll be fine (Um yeah, Mr Carlson... hehe). Time is definitely going to drag the next two weeks but at least I'm busy with school.

Speaking of school I officially have the worst...prof...ever. My management prof sits up at a desk in front of the class and literally reads out of the book for two and a half hours. No notes, nothing. And this is an 8 AM class. The odds of me attending class on non-test days? Not good.

I'm a little hesitant about going into this because this is going to deal with issues that are deeply personal to two people who are dear to me. Of course this is MY journal and I feel the need to go over this for my own reasons but out of deference for their privacy and simple good manners I won't go into great details about past events. Those of you reading this probably already know most if not all of it anyway.

Last July my good friend Sam told me that his girlfriend Liza was coming to visit. I had been introduced to her online a few weeks prior. After chatting with her a few times she seemed like a nice person, fun to talk to, if a little oversexed ;) and I looked forward to meeting her. As it happened, Sam needed a ride to the airport and without him even asking I volunteered. Funny thing was I had to work that day and needed to take a vacation day in order to do it. It would have been easy for me to say "Sorry man, can't do it" but for some odd reason I felt the urge to help him out. At first I thought it was simply me trying to help but now I think it was something entirely different.

I drove him to the airport and the wait was fairly uneventful, except for us seeing Mick Foley striding out of the boarding gate. Soon after that Liza arrived, dressed in a purple blouse and black slacks. Like most normal heterosexual males I usually don't take note of what females are wearing but for some reason the image stuck in my mind. After the greetings and introductions and getting luggage and whatnot I drove them back to Sam's place (scaring Liza to death with my driving). A couple of days later Liza needed to go shopping for computer parts as she was attempting to build Sam a computer, so Sam asked me if I would kindly drive her around. No problem I said. So I picked her up and we drove around various places looking for computer stuff and later on I got her some food at Arby's (which apparently was a big deal, unbeknownst to me) and some legendary Katie's Korner ice cream. Afterwards we went back to Sam's place and Liza tried in vain to get the computer working. [It was the motherboard. No... really it was. *crickets* ;)] I got to know Liza a little bit better and my general impression was that Sam was a very very lucky man. I have to admit I was a little bit envious but I was much more happy for him. They seemed to be a perfect fit, and I even went so far as to tell Liza that she was a female version of Sam. Fast forward several months. Liza and myself had become friends and we chatted when I was online, which wasn't too often, but I did look forward to talking with her - even if she did tease me about not getting any ;)

By this time some heavy stuff had been going on regarding Sam that I will not go into. Suffice it to say that my very good friend had made some very poor choices. And I took every opportunity to tell him so. What made the situation all the more intolerable was that one of our friends had been in almost exactly the same situation and Sam had taken great delight in pointing out how wrong and stupid our other friend was being, but yet somehow decided to make the same mistakes he made. The bitter irony was somehow lost on him. All this time I was talking to Liza and was of course sworn to secrecy. Being the good friend that I thought I was, I kept silent.

As time went on the proverbial shit had hit the fan and it had become increasingly obvious that Liza was no longer happy, and our conversations became more and more dominated by discussions about her and Sam. At first I thought this was the classic case of the emotionally deprived female seeking out a shoulder to cry on but it quickly became apparent that there were real problems she needed help dealing with. I tried to give her the best advice I could, and I'd like to think I helped a little bit. As for Sam, I made a few attempts to talk about things but for the most part I was on a tightrope. In all honesty these were matters that should have been discussed between the two of them. I suppose I could have figuratively grabbed him by the shirt-collar and pounded some sense into him but he was a big boy and if you know Sam, that kind of stuff wouldn't have been well received. So again, I remained silent.

Eventually things came to a head as Liza wrestled with bringing about the inevitable. There was no smoking gun or straw that broke the camel's back, she just got to that point.

A few weeks later we were talking online and as usual she was teasing me about not getting any but somehow the conversation evolved into a fanciful and romantic flight involving a knight and his lady escaping a frigid castle on a winged steed. This might sound lame but the whole thing was intoxicating. I tried not to think too much about it but the next night Liza admitted to me that she hadn't slept very well and her head was spinning. When I told her that I was feeling the same way, things progressed from there.

Unfortunately for me I was now in a very bad spot. In the space of a few days I had found out the bittersweet truth that the ex-girlfriend of one of my best friends was what I had been searching for all along, and that she wanted me as well. I had a choice to make, but after careful reflection, I found I really had no choice at all. So I (we) told Sam what had happened. Needless to say things did not go very well. Sam and I still talk, but not in depth anymore and not nearly as much as we used to. A line had been crossed, and we are still friends but things will never be the same.

Why did I do it? I thought I knew Liza fairly well before we got together but in actuality I didn't. The first thing I noticed was this boy who pretty much hates to talk on the phone would spend literally hours and hours with her and not be the slightest bit bored (thank God for unlimited LD). The second thing I noticed was that we had much more in common than we originally thought. Yeah Liza is a geek goddess and all that but it's much deeper than that - a love of dogs, art, similar temperaments and attitudes, etc. but yet there's still more.

Those who know me would say I'm a fairly cynical guy. My friend Jim Fowler described me as the quintessential "glass half-empty man". I'm a hopeless romantic at heart, but my jaded eye had seen too much for me to believe in stuff like destiny, fairy tale endings and the like.

Consider me a changed man. It sounds trite and cliched but there is a mystical bond between me and Liza. She has already written about the teddy-bear incident, but there is much more. We know what the other is thinking, and finish each other's sentences. We know when the other isn't feeling well before we say anything. On one occasion I was able to tell her exactly what she was wearing, down to the details on her shirt (which she had never mentioned). I'll be honest, it is very very cool but there are sometimes when it is downright frightening.

Ok enough babbling. Congratulations for reading all this, wish I had some sort of prize for you. As for me I get to be bored to tears in class. Ciao.

Agh. Starting today I have two classes. One at 8 am, the other at 5:30 pm. Oh the joy. Wouldn't be so bad if I had been able to actually... you know, sleep.... but I've been on Alaska time for the past few months and it finally caught up to me. No more four hour phone conversations sweetie :(

When I'm more coherent I'll go over the events that have led me to my dream girl. For those of you already intimately familiar with the story I'll give fair warning so you can skip it. To quote Jimmy Buffett - some of it's magic, some of it's tragic - but I wouldn't trade it (or her) for the world.
